Tana not banking on storied All Blacks past

Tana Umaga says he will not assume his new role as All Blacks defence coach will automatically add to his legacy in the famous black jersey.

Umaga will work under head coach Dave Rennie and alongside Neil Barnes and Mike Blair in new All Blacks coaching set-up.

“It’s a huge honour and a privilege to be part of this group,” said Umaga. “I’m really thankful for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to it.”

Despite his decorated playing career, which included 74 Tests and the captaincy, Umaga insists he will approach the role with humility.

“I’m never one to assume,” he said. “I don’t think this is how it should be because that’s what it was like in my day. I’m not that kind of person and I never wanted to be. It’s about accepting where we’re at now and seeing where I can add value.”

UMAGA: Unbelievable to be back

Umaga emphasised that the modern environment differs significantly from his playing days, and he is focused on supporting Rennie’s vision rather than relying on past experiences.

“It’s about what Dave wants and really backing that. Once we get in there, we’ll understand where we can contribute.”

Before linking up with the All Blacks, Umaga remains committed to his role with Moana Pasifika in Super Rugby Pacific.

“I’ve got to make sure I do well with Moana Pasifika and respect the time I’ve got here,” he said. “I’m here until the end of the season and we’ve still got things we want to achieve.”
