The Stormers are turning back to a proven formula at exactly the right time, with Dan du Plessis and Ruhan Nel reuniting in midfield.
It’s a pairing steeped in success. It’s the same combination that drove the Cape side to their 2021-22 Vodacom URC title – and one that still carries a deep, almost instinctive understanding.
“He keeps tapping me on the shoulder and telling me that we’re close,” Du Plessis said on Wednesday of his long-time midfield partner. “I really enjoy playing with him. I think he’s done tremendous work as captain.”

Nel’s influence has grown significantly in recent months, not just as a leader, but as a calming, organising presence in the heart of the defence.
“I always knew he was a good leader, but I don’t think I expected him to make that much of an impact that he does [as a captain],” Du Plessis added. “I’ve been really impressed with him in terms of that.
“On the field as well, he’s a really good communicator, a strong ball-carrier, and he helps me out a lot defensively. It’s always nice playing alongside him.”

Having first linked up in 2018, the duo’s connection has evolved into something close to second nature.
“If you play with somebody new in the midfield, you don’t quite have that relationship,” Du Plessis said. “There’s a lot of things that I understand [about his game]. I know what he’s going to do.”
