Struggling Harlequins have confirmed the appointment of a former Wallabies coach as performance director from next season.
The experienced Robbie Deans will link up with newly appointed head coach Jason Gilmore, who has been in interim charge since the start of the current campaign.
It’s a significant intervention from the English Premiership side, who are battling near the foot of the table after slipping to a sixth straight defeat – their latest setback coming against Gloucester.

Deans brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as an assistant with the All Blacks before becoming the first foreign head coach of Australia in 2007.
“Harlequins is a proud club with a strong history and it is a privilege to be asked to contribute towards the future,” Deans said. “There are many good people within their ranks and I look forward to working with them.”
The club have also confirmed that former Exeter Chiefs coach Rob Hunter will join as forwards coach in July, adding further experience to a reshaped coaching group.
UMAGA: Unbelievable to be back
Gilmore believes Deans’ arrival could prove pivotal as Quins look to steady the ship.
“Having Robbie come on board is such a positive addition. The guidance and support he will provide me personally, as well as our coaching and playing group, will be invaluable.”
