Eight-try Lions crush Edinburgh

The Lions produced a commanding display against Edinburgh at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Eight tries, including a brace from winger Angelo Davids, secured a 54-17 win for the hosts that moved them back up to seventh on the Vodacom URC log.

The Lions, who were presented with the SA Shield after the match, are aiming to reach the URC playoffs for the first time.

Coach Ivan van Rooyen’s men made a fast start, with Ruan Venter – who started at No 4 lock in a late switch – powering over for the opening try.

Fullback Quan Horn and lock Darrien Landsberg then crossed in quick succession, with flyhalf Chris Smith again adding the extras to stretch the lead to 21-0 after 21 minutes.

Springbok scrumhalf Morné van den Berg marked his 100th Lions appearance with a try, collecting an offload from Smith to score the bonus-point try.

Edinburgh applied pressure late in the half after No 8 Francke Horn was shown a yellow card, but the Lions held firm. A turnover on their own line sparked a counter-attack, with Van den Berg linking with centre Bronson Mills, whose converted try made it 35-0 at the break.

Edinburgh got on the board early in the second half through replacement prop Ewan Ashman, but the Lions responded immediately as Davids scored their sixth try.

Flank Freddy Douglas added a second for Edinburgh, before Davids struck again for the Lions.

Centre Matt Currie crossed for Edinburgh’s third, but the Lions finished with a flourish as replacement scrumhalf Haashim Pead’s score took them past 50.

The Lions host the Dragons next Saturday, while Edinburgh travel to Cape Town to take on the Stormers.

LIONS – Tries: Ruan Venter, Darrien Landsberg, Quan Horn, Morné van den Berg, Bronson Mills, Angelo Davids (2), Haashim Pead. Conversions: Chris Smith (7).
EDINBURGH – Tries: Ewan Ashman, Freddy Douglas. Conversions: Cammy Scott.
