Juarno Augustus was a glaring omission from the group of overseas-based players to attend the first virtual Springbok alignment camp of the year, writes MORNÉ ESBEN.
Injuries have plagued Augustus’ career, but over the past 12 months, the consequences have been particularly severe for the man known as ‘Trokkie’.
The powerful No 8 has been overlooked by Rassie Erasmus for the upcoming camp, despite showing flashes of his best form when fit.

Augustus had forced his way into Erasmus’ plans ahead of the 2025 season, earning a place in a previous alignment camp. However, a failed transfer medical during his move from the Northampton Saints to Ulster meant he never reported for duty.
When eventually declared fit, he made an immediate impact in both the Vodacom URC and EPCR Challenge Cup.
But just as momentum began to build, injury struck again. In December, Augustus tore ankle ligaments – an injury that sidelined him for three months and once again stalled his progress.
He has since bounced back impressively, earning Man of the Match honours against Edinburgh and showing little sign of his lengthy layoff.

So far this season, Augustus has started seven of nine matches for Ulster, averaging 54 minutes per game across the URC and Challenge Cup.
His previous campaign at Northampton underlined his pedigree. In 2024-25, he started 15 of 19 matches, surpassed 1,000 minutes on the field, and played a key role in the club’s run to the Investec Champions Cup final. He missed that decider through injury, but delivered a standout performance in the semi-final win over Leinster in Dublin.

Despite rediscovering form, Augustus finds himself squeezed out.
Erasmus’ depth at No 8 remains formidable, with Jasper Wiese, Kwagga Smith, Cameron Hanekom and Evan Roos all firmly in the mix.
For now, Augustus is the unlucky casualty.
But the door is not completely closed. Erasmus has previously selected players who were not part of initial alignment camps – offering Augustus a lifeline as he looks to force his way back into contention.
