Springbok great Naas Botha has confirmed that he and his family have relocated to the USA.
Botha and his wife Karen issued a joint statement after reports surfaced earlier this week suggesting the family had settled in Kansas. Two of the couple’s three daughters are believed to have received sports scholarships there.
“South Africa will forever hold a special place in our hearts, and we are grateful for the years we were able to live as part of its culture and community,” the couple said.
“In short, this move is about family and the opportunities that lie ahead. We thank everyone for their understanding, and we will miss you all.”
The 68-year-old also expressed his gratitude to the South African rugby community that supported him throughout his career.
“Being part of South African rugby – from the Springboks to Northern Transvaal (Blue Bulls) – has been one of the greatest honours of my life,” Botha said.
“Whether you supported me or not, I will always cherish the bond we share.”

Botha added that the USA held personal significance for both him and his wife.
“As everyone knows, years ago I had the opportunity to play NFL football in the US for the Dallas Cowboys, and Karen was here on a sports scholarship at the University of Nebraska,” he said.
“Those experiences were meaningful chapters in our lives, and now our children have found their own opportunities here. This move is simply a continuation of that journey and is in the best interest of our family.”
