Ex-Scotland captain stripped of MBE

Former Scotland and British & Irish Lion fullback Stuart Hogg has been stripped of a British public honour.

A notice in The Gazette, the official public record, stated Hogg’s appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) had been “cancelled and annulled”.

Hogg, now 33, received the MBE in the 2024 New Year Honours list for services to rugby.

In November 2024, the former Scotland captain admitted to abusing his estranged wife by shouting and swearing, tracking her movements and sending her messages which were alarming and distressing in nature.

He was sentenced to a community payback order with one year of supervision as an alternative to jail in January the following year.

Earlier in 2025, the Scottish National Party’s Westminster leader, Stephen Flynn, had called for Hogg to be stripped of the honour, with Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, also of the SNP, agreeing such a move was “reasonable and understandable”.

Hogg won his final Scotland cap in March 2023.

He retired from professional rugby in July 2023 but returned ahead of the 2024-25 European season after signing for Montpellier on a two-year contract. He is still at the French Top 14 club.
