Former Springbok lock Victor Matfield believes Dave Rennie is exactly what All Black rugby needs – a fresh voice with a clear vision.
Speaking on the Rugby Rivals podcast, Matfield said Rennie’s return to New Zealand after time abroad may prove to be a decisive factor in shaping a new era for the All Blacks.
“He’s been in the system in New Zealand, now he’s been away for a bit. So he comes in and he’s starting something new. He’s coming in saying ‘this is the culture I want’. It’s not coming from the Crusaders or the Highlanders or the Hurricanes. So I think that probably helps a little bit as well.”
RENNIE: All Blacks will be picked on form
Matfield suggested that not being directly aligned to one of New Zealand’s dominant Super Rugby clubs could work in Rennie’s favour, giving him greater freedom to establish his own identity within the national setup.
And when it comes to the playing group, the former Bok captain believes the foundations are already there.
“With the talent that the All Blacks have, they just need someone to put them in the right direction.”

But Matfield also expects changes behind the scenes, particularly among Rennie’s support staff.
“As a coach, you need guys around you who think about the game the same way you do. People who you trust, people who you’ve worked with and people who will strengthen your weaknesses.
“If I were a head coach, I’d like to bring in my own guys so I’d be surprised if he keeps all the [current] assistant coaches.”
