Boan: Make Daan doctor of scrums

Springbok prop Boan Venter has lauded scrum coach Daan Human’s ruthless approach to scrumming.

The set-piece is one of the Boks’ key weapons heading into a tough international season.

“Coach Daan is an incredible person. They might as well give him a doctorate for scrummaging,” Venter told Rapport.

“You get along easily with him. I have a lot of respect for him. He is always direct and straight with you.”

Venter, who made his Springbok debut last year, says Human’s influence goes far beyond technical detail. The former Bok, he explains, understands scrumming at its rawest level.

“He lived in the ‘oven’ himself,” Venter said. “He knows which strings to pull to make the Bok scrum a well-oiled machine.”

SIYA: I’m ready to fight for my Bok place

That understanding feeds into a clear objective: not just to compete, but to dictate terms.

“The scrum doctor and the players don’t just want to compete, we want to set the pace,” Venter said. “There’s nothing better than putting the pack scrumming against you into reverse and then going over them as an eight-man unit.”

RASSIE: Boks must be ‘ballsy’ in brutal Test year

The 28-year-old featured in eight of the Boks’ 14 Tests last year and despite the intense competition among the props, Venter says the culture is built on collective success rather than individual wins.

“The individual mustn’t win – the Boks must,” he explained. “Boan mustn’t win – the team must win.”
