The Sharks have confirmed the signing of an experienced Lions playmaker to bolster their ranks next season.
Gianni Lombard trades Joburg for Durban and has signed a three-year contract which will keep him at the coast until 2029. The team confirmed the signing on X on Wednesday.
The move was first reported about in Rapport on Sunday, and according to the publication, Lombard’s reported arrival is expected to be viewed more as a depth signing than a marquee acquisition. He is not regarded as a frontline Springbok contender, which would make him available to the Sharks for large stretches of the season – a valuable asset for a side that often has to cope without its international stars.

The 28-year-old’s versatility is another factor believed to have appealed to the Durban-based outfit. Lombard can cover fullback, centre and flyhalf, offering important cover when Springboks such as Aphelele Fassi, Ethan Hooker, Andre Esterhuizen and Jordan Hendrikse are unavailable. He is also understood to be a reliable goal-kicking option.
With Chris Smith, Henco van Wyk and Quan Horn all on the Lions’ books, Lombard has reportedly slipped down the pecking order in Joburg.
